Cosafa Castle Cup done and dusted with Zimbabwe claiming a historic fifth Cosafa Castle Cup trophy.
As from the 25th june, North West hosted Cosafa Castle Cup games, the games that played in two stadia ,Moruleng stadium and Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace. Bojanala District was a centre for tourism for football fanatics until the 9th July 2017 .Cosafa Castle Cup provided Bokonebophirima with the needed boost in its goal to make the province the centre for tourism.
The 14 teams’ tournament started with two groups of 4 teams each as other seated teams to only join in the quarter finals .Tanzania, the invited team, emerged in group A with 5 points and Zimbabwe won group B with 7 points. They were joined by other six seated teams, South Africa, Botswana , Zambia, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland .
South Africa bundled out of the tournament at the hands of Tanzania as Zimbabwe, Zambia and Lesotho went through to semi finals by beating Swaziland, Botswana and Namibia respectively. Cosafa Castle cup gives a second chance to defeated quarterfinalists through the plate semi finals where South Africa defeated Botswana with two goals to zero and Namibia giving Swaziland their bus fair with one goal to zero.
Moruleng Stadium became the battleground when the semi-finalists teams locked horns in a battle to book a place in the final. Zambia gave Tanzania a hiding by whipping them with four goals to two in the first semi-final. On the other hand, in a seven goals thriller, Zimbabwe drubbed Lesotho by four goals to three to book a spot on a Sunday final. Plate finals between South Africa and Namibia was played on the seventh at Moruleng together with third place play off between Tanzania and Lesotho .Bafana Bafana defeated Brave Warriors with one goal to zero, while Tanzania defeated Lesotho on penalties to claim the third place.
Zimbabwe have always been outright favourites as their supporters came in numbers to support their team as it went through the tournament to reach the finals. Zimbabwe paid their loyal supporters by defeating Zambia in a very hotly contested final at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace with a goal margin of three to one .
Bokonebophirima benefited from this tournament as the guest houses and hotels gave much needed accommodation to teams ,supporters ,journalists and Cosafa officials. Cosafa Castle cup through its Corporate Social investment drive visited Tapologo Hospice and Reoleboge Special School giving them gifts ranging from Cosafa jackets, soccer balls and twenty thousand worth of equipment for welding . A touching moment for Reoleboge Special School was when Zimbabwe and Namibia teams chipped in with cash donations of three thousand and six thousand rands respectively .
