MAKE EVERY DAY A MANDELA DAY

The Department of Education and Sport Development hosted a Mandela Day celebration at Ithuteng High School, Moretele to spend their 67 minutes. The Acting Mayor of Ward 25 Ms. K.N Mleta, Acting HOD Ms. S.M Semaswe and member of Parliament Ms. Mlule Maluleka were part of the event.
Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognitions of Nelson Mandela's birthday on 17 July 2009 via unanimous decision of the United Nations general assembly. It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier for the next generation to take the burden of leadership in addressing the world's social injustice when he said '' it is in your hands now ".
The aim of the event was to honour Madiba’s 67 years of humanity through spending your 67 minutes to help the needy. The community came in large quantities to participate in painting and cleaning the school premises to signify their humanity and embrace the spirit of Ubuntu.
Hon. MEC Jonas Lehari chose 7 elderly people of Moeka village to be assisted with food parcels. The family’s have shown their appreciation and their hearts were filled joy. The 88 year old Mr. Johannes Bonela as one of the elders was very thrilled and praised the MEC.
It is more than a celebration of Madiba's life and legacy. It is a global movement to honor his life’s work and change the world for the better.
Acting HOD has put an emphasis on Ubuntu by encouraging the community to help the needy, and to love and take care of people infected with HIV and AIDS. The community was also encouraged to continue helping the needy and remembering Madiba.
Mandela day initially urged people to spend 67 minutes on 18 July on community service. Later that was shifted to a call to make everyday a Mandela day with actions encouraged along four pillars ,education and literacy , food security, shelter and volunteering . Mandela day celebration is an indication that everyone is enjoying the benefits of freedom, said councillor Mleta.
