The North West Education and Sport Development department continues to expose the youth talent through the Provincial North West Games 2017, held at North West University Sports grounds on Saturday, 03 February 2018.

District champions in female and male football, cricket, rugby and netball teams gathered to compete for the Provincial championship title. The North West Games are always held annually, teams compete from the local municipalities until to the district level. Elimination started last year September at different service points.

The North West Games project has been identified as the program that exposes talent from grassroots to provincial level. They have been established and implemented since 2013 with the level of participation increasing annually and gradually been recognized by various stakeholders.

The North West Education and Sport Development MEC, Sello Lehari expressed that these games are a platform for community sport.

"The North West Games project is geared towards affording an opportunity to all members of the community to participate in sport and keep the nation active irrespective of affiliation. Its main reason is to allow non-affiliated clubs to participate in the mainstream Federation structures wherein the participants will benefit in the broader development programmes of organized code structures", said Lehari.

All the teams played a round robin rules and in Netball the Mighty Kings from Mogogelo Village in Bojanala obtained position one. In female football Bianca Academy from Blydeville near Lichtenburg obtained position one whilst in the male football Letlhabile United obtained the first position.

In cricket the Motlosana Hub from Dr Kenneth Kaunda district obtained the first position and in rugby Zeerust Rugby Academy from Ngaka Modiri Molema district obtained position one.

MEC Lehari further said as a department they are happy to see young people participating in sport rather than using drugs and other illegal activities. He highlighted that the primary objective of his department is to keep the nation active to deal away with opportunistic life style diseases like sugar diabetes, stress, high blood pressure, etc.

Thebe Sekoto the Provincial Secretary for the Provincial Sport Confederation highlighted that they are excited about these games because young people get an opportunity to be seen by different professional teams.

On Friday, 09 February 2018 the department will be launching the Villages, Township and Small Dorpies (VTSD) tournament at Moretele Local Municipality.
