MEC LEHARI CONDEMNS ASSAULT OF TEACHERS BY LEARNERS
The North West Education and Sport Development MEC, Sello Lehari condemned in strongest terms the assault of the five teachers by learners at Rearabilwe Secondary School at Ntsoeletsoku Village near Zeerust.
It is reported that two Grade ten learners who are 21 and 18 years old respectively, on Wednesday, 07 March 2018 played music loud with their cellphones in the middle of the lesson. They disturbed teaching and learning in the classroom and the principal reprimanded them to come with their parents at school the next day.
Only one of the two learners came to school with his mother and went through a disciplinary process organized by the school. The outcome of the disciplinary process suspended the learner seven days to stay home and not come to school.
On Friday, 09 March 2018 the two boys decided to attend the assembly irrespective of the suspension levelled against one of the learners. The two boys disrupted the assembly in the morning and attacked the five teachers (four males and one female) specifically those who took part in the disciplinary proceedings. The Grade twelve learners intervened and managed to defuse the incident. The teachers sustained minor injuries and teaching and learning could not take place on that day.
The North West Education and Sport Development MEC, Sello Lehari could not hide his disturbance after the incident.
“On behalf of the department I wish to condemn in strongest terms the assault of the five teachers by learners at Rearabilwe Secondary school. A teacher within the school premises of the school is regarded as a parent to all learners. As a department we view such an incident as a serious offence which warrant an intensive punishment”, said Lehari.
The teachers opened the case with the police and the two boys were immediately arrested. The department has organized counselling for the teachers and learners.
