The North West Department of Education and Sport Development mourns the death of a Grade 12 boy learner of Boikagong Secondary in Rustenburg drowned in a swimming pool at a guesthouse in Mooinooi on Thurdsday, 27 September 2018.
The incident happened in the afternoon while swimming with others as they were at the venue for their matric farewell celebrations. Paramedics were called in and regrettably could not resuscitate the learner.
Counselling services were administered to all learners who witnessed the tragic accident.
The department conveys its sincerest condolences to the family and school community.
A date for memorial service and funeral will later be announced.
This is the third death case reported in the province this month following two others of a teacher allegedly stabbed to death by a learner in Zeerust and one of a Taung learner who was allegedly beaten by a mob of taxi drivers.
The department wishes all learners and teachers a safe September break.
