Grade 9 Gaopalelwe Secondary learner allegedly killed by Taxi drivers
The North West Department of Education and Sport Development announce with sadness the death of a 16 year old Grade 9 boy learner of Gaopalelwe Secondary School in Boitumelong Township in Bloemhof who was allegedly killed by a mob of taxi drivers.
It is believed that war broke out in the area between gangsters and taxi drivers in the pre-evening of Thursday, 20 September. The learner was reportedly not part of gangsters. He was walking down the street when taxi drivers snatched him inside the taxi and beat him. He later died at a local clinic.
School activities have been badly affected by the incident.
MEC Sello Lehari for Education and Sport Development says it is devastating that a life of an innocent learner was lost amid community feud.
“We are truly sad and shocked to find out of the unfortunate death of our learner. We send out or deepest condolences to the family and school community and we trust that law will prevail against perpetrators of this deadly crime”, Lehari said
The department is yet to visit the learner’s family once the atmosphere subsides, as they will be advised by police. The angry community members have barred other neighbouring communities from entering their vicinity.
